Numeracy across the Curriculum

Numeracy across the CurriculumNumeracy Mission statement

"Raising the standards of numeracy across learning is the responsibility of all, to ensure that our students can cope with the numerical demands of everyday life."
Clacton County High School is committed to raising the standards of numeracy for all of its students. We aim to provide opportunities for all students to utilise numeracy skills effectively in all areas of the curriculum as we recognise that competence in numeracy is integral to students being able to cope confidently with the demands of further education, employment and adult life.

Numeracy Fortnight

Throughout the year, we focus on different numeracy related topics every fortnight and bring numeracy into lessons across all the subject areas. An example was using time in lessons to help and encourage students to tell the time correctly. Students across all year groups have shown gaps in their understanding of telling the time on analogue clocks, 24 hour clocks and even digital clocks. It is sometimes assumed that being able to tell the time is a skill already mastered by students when they come to secondary school. They are reliant on using digital devices and they lack the skills to manage time using analogue clocks and watches. Telling the time is a life skill which all students should master; in school exams time management is key to students being successful and later in life they need to be able to read timetables (e.g. bus and train).

Teaches incorporated activities into their lessons:
• They used the clocks in classrooms, asked students the time, used stop watches to time specific activities and included the use of the 24 hour clock in their questioning.
• How long will something take to cook - what time does it go in the oven, what time do you need to check?
• Timed activities: starting at unusual times e.g It’s 16 minutes past 9, this task will take 7 minutes; what time will we finish?
• A film lasts for (X) length of time, if it started at (Y) o’clock, what time would it end?
• They also included challenges - the last train leaves at... will you get back or what time will you get back to Clacton?
• Telling the time in another language!

Parents, you can also play a part - "as we help you, to help your child...."
