CCHS Formula 24+ Racing Team -

CCHS Formula 24 Racing Team
Last year we embarked on a new venture with the ‘CCHS Formula 24+ Racing Team’, sponsored by Comus Engineering Europe, based in Thorpe-le-Soken. The Formula 24 initiative is run by Greenpower and sponsored by Ford and Siemens to inspire the next generation of engineers. Our young engineers spent their spare time designing and building an electric car with a standard motor and sets of batteries.

The electric racing car gradually took shape throughout last year as our Sixth Form STEM students worked tirelessly on its construction and testing. All their hard work culminated in an opportunity to race against other schools’ cars at the Rockingham Race Circuit during July.

The team had to overcome a number of setbacks during the day including failing their pre-race ‘MOT’ and component failures, as they overheated on one of the hottest days of the year. The students rectified all of the problems they faced without input from the accompanying adults, as per the rules, and managed to record a top speed of 20 miles an hour, twice that of their initial practice laps. There is still a lot more for the team to do as the fastest cars, using exactly the same electric motor and batteries, managed to clock 40 miles an hour. It’s not all about the speed or distance covered as the cars also need to have the endurance to complete the ninety minute race which many fast cars didn’t! The team had a fantastic day finishing 23rd overall and having learnt a tremendous amount during the year, it is now back to the drawing board to improve the car for this year’s racing programme.

The car has been stripped down and is in the progress of being completely rebuilt with a lighter frame, improved gearing and better aerodynamic efficiency.

Careers Lab -

Students who are intrested in studying and following a career in an Engineering based discipline benefit from our links with industry. They are encouraged to broaden their skills base within their chosen engineering field and our links with Careers Lab help us inspire them. As young people enter the workforce many find they are chasing jobs they don’t necessarily have the relevant skills for. Businesses have vacancies and are crying out for more skilled workers. Now more than ever it's imperative for businesses to inspire and support young people moving into the world of work and to address the skills gap. Careers Lab does this by enabling schools and businesses from a variety of industries to work together to equip young people with the inspiration, knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the UK economy.
