REAL Day focuses on Careers

Last week’s REAL (Religious, Ethical and Life-Long Learning) Day, had a special emphasis on future career paths and personal development. Students spent the morning away from their usual timetable to focus on some of the Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) elements of our curriculum.

The big topic of the day helped empower the students to start thinking about what they would like to do in the future. A large careers fair included exhibits from employers, training providers and universities, along with representatives from the armed forces. Throughout the day, every student had the opportunity to tour the fair to discuss their future ideas with the experts and gain a valuable insight into a number of career opportunities. The UK Border Force stand proved to be extremely popular, with students fascinated in the extent and variety of work that the Force are engaged with. Many were unable to detect that the Nike Sports shoes that the team had with them were actually forgeries. During their REAL day, students also had the opportunity to explore KUDOS, a career ideas package, which every CCHS student can use, both in school and at home, to match their interests with possible career paths and jobs that would suit them. Click here for a link to KUDOS and more careers information.

The special day also included lectures on ‘Growth Mindset’ and ‘Confident Thinking’. Within the next few months, our Year 11 students face the culmination of eleven years education, as they approach their GCSE and BTEC exams. At this significant time in their lives, it is important that they have a positive attitude, self-belief and a revision plan to help them avoid the stress of the coming months. Over half of their day was devoted to lectures delivered by ‘Fix-Up Seminars’, to help prepare their minds to sustain a positive ‘champion’ attitude. These were exceedingly well received and we hope that our Year 11 students will implement many of their ideas and recommendations.

Year 7 students also benefited from the expertise of the Fix-Up presenters, with a talk entitled ‘I am Amazing’. They focused on how to aspire to future goals, linking nicely to our REAL Careers Day, as well as developing skills to make studying more enjoyable and showing students how to motivate themselves by utilising an ‘Eagle Attitude’ to be the best in all they do.

Our Year 7 students took on a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge for one of their REAL day sessions. They had to create a special delivery device system to transport an egg from a height without breaking it and deploy it away from the delivery device, once it was on the ground – similar to landing a space probe on a planet. Many teams managed to get the egg on the ground and close to their target, but few managed to deploy the egg. Well done to them all! Thankfully, the systems were tested with plastic eggs – just to save having to clear up a potential messy floor!
