First World War Remembrance

First World War History Project
WW1 PROUD WALL

In addition, our CCHS History department are still on the lookout for any connections that students and their families have to World War 1, to feature on our special PROUD wall; people with different contributions to WWI, who students/staff wish to remember and acknowledge.
If you have any personal connections to the war, i.e. people who fought or worked in munitions, this could be family, friends of the family or indeed a local person, please let us know. Their actions need not to have been heroic; we are interested in all aspects of people’s lives during wartime. To share your story, email in, or students can bring their story into school, for the attention of our history department. It would be fantastic if we could have an accompanying photo of the person in question.

Inclusion Ambassadors Teach Staff

Having helped a number of our Year 7 students settle into life at CCHS, our Inclusion Ambassadors are now helping staff understand their needs. Supported by the Inclusion Hub team, they recently led an after school training session for all our teaching staff, focusing on the needs of our SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disability) students. The ambassadors spoke about their own individual needs and how staff can further support the needs of our SEND students within their lessons, through highlighting what they find helpful.

The teacher feedback from the evening was fantastic – they commented on the professionalism of the ambassadors and the confidence they demonstrated in delivering their sessions. Well done team!

Sea Cadets Parade for Trafalgar Day

Year 9 twin sisters, Jane and Elizabeth Hammond, recently joined hundreds of other cadets in London to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, in the Sea Cadets’ national Trafalgar Day Parade, a tradition going back over 100 years. On the 21st October 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson defeated the French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar in southwest Spain, losing his life at the height of his most famous victory.

The talented musicians are members of Clacton’s Troopship Atherstone Sea Cadet Corp. Their love of music has resulted in their selection to the London Eastern District Sea Cadet Band and subsequently, to the National Massed Band of the Sea Cadets. The girls spent two days rehearsing in Portsmouth at HMS Excellent, before leading the Trafalgar Day Parade as part of the Sea Cadet Massed Band, marching from Horse Guards Parade to Trafalgar Square, before returning down The Mall to Buckingham Palace, after the parade.

This was the second time that the twins have led the national parade as part of the massed band. They will be playing again with the Sea Cadet band in this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show, in London on the 10th November, as well as performing the night before at the London Baltic Exchange.
